I've always loved a lot of Victorian design as well as the visions of what the future would look like in those cheesy serials from the 30's and 40's.
This is an attempt to combine these two styles into one composition.
I've seen a lot of archival pictures and for some reason, the ones with trains and train stations have always caught my eye. Since I wanted the two styles combined in a fantasy/sci-fi setting, I made the train really large scale and stuck a huge jet engine on the side to suggest a really powerful locomotive.
Rodney Matthews, a well-known and very skilled fantasy illustrator, has done a huge train picture as well (Heavy Metal Hero). His train, while certainly achieving the sense of colossal size, is less grounded in reality and what one would expect of the "Fantasy Art" genre (i.e.: threatening-looking and drenched in testosterone).
The human figures in this model were scanned photos from various travel magazines and royalty-free archival books and modified in Photoshop.
